SAN FRANCISCO — Apple Inc. is planning to debut its next iPhone at a Sept. 10 media event, according to a report by an AllThingsD technology blog post over the weekend. The report cited unnamed sources, though the timing would be similar to last year’s launch of the iPhone 5. Analysts widely expect Apple to introduce both an iPhone 5S as well as a lower cost iPhone for lower-end customers this year. The company has been losing share in the smartphone market to Google’s Android platform. A report from IDC last week found that Apple’s iOS accounted for 13% of smartphone sales in the second quarter compared to 17% in the same period last year, while Android expanded its share of the market to 79% from 69% in the same period. Like MarketWatch, AllThingsD is owned by News Corp.
